I HAVE A LOT TO SAY BUT I WON'T
Project Project Gallery - April 2025
This show dealt with a lot of themes, identity, abjection, trust, and control. The works were primarily made out of my own hair which I had been saving since 2019. Other elements included used dental floss, old underwear and nylons, and scissors. Guests were invited to interact with all the pieces in the show. Touching the pieces was encouraged.
The first thing you saw when you walked in the space was a large frame with ripped nylons stretched around it, suspended from the ceiling and hanging directly in front of the entry. There was no way to enter the space without confronting this fleshy form. A large pair of scissors was hung in front of it. You couldn't enter the gallery without walking underneath it, and you had to be paying attention to know they were even there.
Scissors were suspended from the ceiling around the whole the gallery, creating an ominous atmosphere and making the viewers question their trust in the space.
Is this a safe place to be in?
As a femme presenting queer and freak, this is something I ask myself constantly.
On one end of the gallery was a tall dresser, an arched mirror with a doll wrapped in gauze sat on top. Each drawer was lined with a satin slip, upon which a hair relic was placed. Guests were invited to go through the dresser to look at the pieces.
An invasion of privacy.
There was an altar placed against one of the walls. A glass bowl holding a lock of my hair and a pair of scissors were placed on top. Above it was a mirror and the text:
"I give you everything I am .... and nothing .... What do you do?"
I wanted to invite guests to leave a piece of themselves with me without directly telling them or asking them what I wanted. I was pleased to see people adding locks of their own hair without me encouraging them to.
